A Place Called Home takes short-term respite residents into the same small, loving homes we care for people in every day — six residents, registered-nurse-directed care, and the same caregivers each morning. There’s no minimum stay, and all ten of our homes take short-term residents.
The most common respite call we get. You’re scheduled for a knee, a hip, or a procedure with a real recovery — and for a few weeks you cannot lift, drive, or be up at night. Your parent stays with us until you’re back on your feet.
A wedding, a funeral, a work trip, or the vacation you’ve postponed for three years. Instead of a patchwork of neighbors and drop-in help, your parent has a bedroom, meals, and caregivers who are there all night.
Caregiver exhaustion is real, and it is not a failure. Families who take a genuine break — two weeks, a month — are the ones still able to care for their parent a year later. Asking for this is good caregiving, not the opposite.

A respite resident isn’t a guest in a spare room. They get a private bedroom and the full care of the home, from the first morning.
You’ll talk to David Murchison, RN — the owner — not a call center. All ten homes take short-term residents and there’s no minimum stay, so he’ll simply tell you honestly what’s open for your dates. Each home is licensed for six residents, so availability moves week to week.
David meets your parent, in person or at the hospital, and confirms the home can safely meet their needs. This is the same assessment a permanent resident gets, and it protects everyone — including your parent.
California requires a current physician’s report and medication list even for a short stay, because a short stay is a real admission to a licensed home. We walk you through it. We do this on hospital-discharge timelines regularly.
Clothes, medications, glasses and hearing aids, a few photographs, and whatever makes the room feel like theirs. The bed, the linens, the meals and the care are ours to handle.
